Yomi Fabiyi, Nollywood Actors Show Up In Court As Trial Of Baba Ijesha Begins.
Nollywood Actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka also known as Baba Ijesha today appreaed at the Yaba Magistrates' court in Lagos as hearing of the case of rape involving a minor begins.
MediaOrchid recalls that the popular actor Baba Ijesha in April attracted the anger of many Nigerians after a video of of his confession to raping a girl of 14.
The guardian of the girl Adekola Adekanya alias Princess who is also a popular comedienne was seen on April 22 in a viral video as she broke down in tears upon realizing that Baba Ijesha who she trusted as a friend and colleague had raped a girl in her care.
According to the Police PRO Muyiws Adejobi, there is substantial evidence available against Baba Ijesha stressing that he was caught on Camera from a closed circuit televison while carrying out the act.
One of the counsels for Baba Ijesha, Adesina Ogunlana, had said the actor was granted bail by a magistrate but alleged that official of the Lagos State Police Command demanded N500,000 to get the thespian released despite a court order granting him bail.
The industrial action by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria had stalled the case but the case is set to commence today as the judicial workers called of their strike last week.
Fabiyi, while speaking with reporters, said, “I am in court because I believe in the rule of law and I have right to come to the court and observe the case.
“The young man is my colleague; I cannot deny him at this stage, I am too refined for that.
“I want to see how the court (hearing) will go because there are so many lacunas, so many things that should have been done.
“I want to see how the rule of law and justice is being served.”
When contacted, spokesman for police in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, told The PUNCH that the trial of Baba Ijesha is “likely to begin this afternoon”.
