The family of late Hon. Mrs Salome Abuh, the erstwhile Kogi state PDP women leader who was murdered ; burnt alive in her home in Ochadamu, in Kogi state during the 2019 Governorship election today Thursday 18 November 2021 organized 2nd year remembrance in honor of her.
The event which saw the arrival of guests like H.E former governor of Kogi state Ibrahim Idris,
Hon. Minster of Women Affairs Dame Paulen Tallen, represented by Ngozi Okonkwo,
Engr. Musa Wada the PDP Governorship Candidate in the 2019 elections,
The Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Hon. CID Maduabum
The PDP National Women Leader (elect), represented by Hon. Helen,
The President General of Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) Lawrence Gilbert,
Architect Chief Gabriel Aduku the former Minister of state for health,
Senator Nicholas Yahaya Ugbane,
Col. Barr Paul Omeruwa (rtd) former military administrator Kogi state,
Senator Dr. Eze Ajaku the president elderly people, seasoned speakers and other notable persons from across the country.
The program which commenced at past 12noon kicked off with opening prayers and was taken further as speakers like Prof. Mutiullah Olasupo, Elder Pharm.Shehu O. Abuh, Ms. Oluchi Nwosu the ED DIELA ORCHID MEDIA, amongst others made presentations on different topics.
Ms. Nwosu while speaking on ' Violence Against Women In Politics' ; The Case Of Late Mrs. Salome Acheju Abuh highlighted the concept of Violence Against Women (WAW) as defined by the United Nations (UN) stressing that Violence against women in politics (VAW-P) easily falls within the definition.
Lamenting underrepresentation of women in politics she said,
" Historically, women are underrepresented in politics sadly they still face the challenge of ' Gender Based Violence 'despite their immense contribution in the electoral processes.
" The convergence of traditional patriarchal gender stereotypes and societies accustomed to gender-based violence prevents women from claiming their political rights in democratic processes," she said.
Nwosu highlighted some negative effect, impact and consequences of victimization and violence against women in politics as; physical injury, financial loss, and property damage, death as well as psychological, and emotional after-effects.
Calling on political parties and leaders, She said,
" Political parties, leaders to must join the fight against Violence Against Women In Elections and Politics by first putting in place Stringent measures to check forms of violence and Abuses in the political space and also help ensure that victims get Justice."
The DG PDP Governors Forum Hon. Maduabum representing the PDP Governors in delivering his speech lamented that humans rights abuses and lack of respect for the sanctity of human life has become the order of the day under the APC led administration.
“We decided to show our presence here because we feel that the impunity as represented by the event that we are commemorating today has continued.
“It has continued because there is no serious response by the government in power to tackle impunity, " he added.
He extended the regard of all PDP Governors to the family and further announced the donation of N10m to support Salome Acheju Abuh foundation.
Elder Simeon Abuh the widower and husband of late Salome Abuh in delivering his address, recounted the incident of November 18 2019 ; the gruesome murder of his late wife and events that have unfolded so far.
" She Staked her neck and remained faithfully committed to the party which earned her a position in Wada-Arọ Campaign Organization and delivered her Local Government Area, just as she did in almost all elections, State and National, including that of the ill-fated election, the Kogi State, Governorship Election of November 16 2019.
" Her doggedness, forthrightness and achievements could not be tolerated resulting to her being marked for that abomination, a cruel act; " burnt alive " maliciously in her own matrimonial house, a cruel death on 'active political service to our fatherland,' be better imagined than to be real. "
He added that by the way of immortalizing Hon. Salome Acheju Abuh, a foundation shall be formally launched in the cause of the programme and further called on all present to support the foundation to enable the family achieve the belief, struggle and cause for which late Salome Abuh paid the Supreme Prize in Nigeria.
