The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on Friday April 9 2021 published names and also released  photographs of some out of the 1,884 inmates who escaped the Owerri Correctional facility on Monday.



The identities of 36 of such inmates were published by the NCS on its website. 

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State on the other hand, has confirmed the arrest of one David Ubong identified as one of the inmates who had escaped on Monday. 



The NCS promised that  more names and pictures would be published in the coming days. 


The Akwa Ibom Police Command, Spokesperson, Odiko Macdon, while addressing the press revealed in Uyo that Ubong one of the escapees confessed to that he actually did escape from the correctional facility .




According to Macdon, the Police was able to re-arrest the escapee after an informant alerted the police. He further stated that the escapee will be taken back to prison serve his time in jail and added that “Until his conviction, the suspect was a resident of Obinze in Owerri, Imo State. Suspect will be sent back to face his jail term.”




Macdon also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Andrew Amiengheme, as saying a mop up operation was ongoing in the area.




Amiengheme reportedly urged residents of Essien Udim and its environs to remain calm but be security conscious.


He also pledged that security agencies would continue to do their best in restoring peace, law and order in the area and state at large.
