A Dutch Appeal Court Declares Branch Of Shell In Nigeria Responsible For Oil Spillage.

A court has ordered Shell Nigeria to pay compensation to Nigerian farmers, while the subsidiary and its Anglo-Dutch parent company were told to install equipment to prevent future damage.
The case which was launched in 2008 by four Nigerian farmers, who alleged widespread pollution on their land farmers. A case which was backed by 'Environmental group Friends of the Earth.' can be said to have seen the light of day.
According to APF the case is linked to three spills in the southern Niger Delta:
- Goi in the Ogoniland region of Rivers State
- Oruma in Bayelsa State
- Ikot Ada Udo in Akwa Ibom State.
According to the court, the amount as payment of compensation would be determined “at a later stage”.
In celebration of the news, the Dutch branch of 'Friends of the Earth' milieudefensie tweeted “ Tears of joy here. After 13 years, we’ve won. ”
MediaOrchid reports that the Dutch Appeal Court also ordered Shell to pay immediate compensations to Nigerian farmers in Niger Delta region who had alleged widespread pollution of their land because of oil Spills, while it's parent company, Royal Dutch Shell, is not liable for compensation but is for installing equipment to prevent future damage.

According to Milieudefensie, the amount of compensation would be decided later stressing that the ruling could affect other Nigerians who have been affected by the oil Spills.
MediaOrchid reports that two of the farmers have died since the case was first filed in 2008.
As at the time of this report, Shell had not commented on the court ruling.
