The Federal Government has described illegal frequencies as a threat to National Security.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of N654m to tackle what he described as 'illegal radio transmission' across South-Eastern region in the country.

In a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Wednesday and chaired by Buhari, a decision was taken after Isa Pantami the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy. According to report by State House Pool, the meeting also saw the release of fund as approved by the president for the Procurement and deployment of a hybrid spectrum monitoring system that will cover the south-eastern parts of Nigeria.

According to Pantami, investigations carried out  across North-East, North-West, North-Central, South-West, and South-South, revealed that about 106 out of 320 frequencies were illegal.

One of such highly popular stations that has been a source of concern to the Nigerian Government is RadioBiafra which is operated by Nnamdi Kanu who is described as the Supreme Leader by the Indigenous People Of Biafra IPOB.

Abubakar Malami the Attorney General of Federation (AGF) speaking at the meeting  recommended that all operators of illegal frequencies be prosecuted describing such acts as a threat to National Security and Safety of Citizens.

He said,

" This is worrisome because the usage of this illegal spectrum of frequencies will compromise our security and safety in the country.

" It is because of the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari on promoting security that we came up with this initiative of monitoring the usage of frequencies and uncovering illegal ones."
