In a briefing of the press at the presidential villa, the Inspector General of Police Adamu Mohammed revealed that 717 reported rape cases were recorded within the months of January to May this year 2020.
This was after a meeting held at the presidential villa with President Mohammdu Buhari, the Minister of Women Affairs Pauline Tallen and the Minister for Information and Culture Lai Mohammed.
Adamu speaking, described rape as a 'wicked offense' and stated that 631 cases are in court while 52 are still under Investigation. He further said that though members of the public are not in the know of the effort and actions taken by Law enforcement agents who by the way have been committed to dealing with these cases.
He said
“The Nigeria Police so far from January-May 2020, we have recorded about 717 rape incidents that were reported across the country; about 799 suspects have been arrested, 631 cases conclusively investigated and charged to court and 52 cases are left and under investigation.
“The police and other security agencies and other non-governmental organisations have been collaborating, to see to it that these cases of rape and gender-based violence are dealt with.
“The NGOs and CSOs that have the capacity to deal with this kind of offences, have been cooperating with law enforcement agencies in capacity building, management of victims of rape and similar offences and procedures for collecting evidence towards successful prosecution."
Adamu while assuring members of the public that the Police remains committed to doing its best to bring an end to the menace also charged members of the public to always speak up against and report crime related to Gender-based Violence.
