Outspoken political activist and social commentator Henry Shield has challenged the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to submit to a transparent forensic investigation following the death of Mary Habila, whose body was discovered at the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Shield, who is the Director-General of the Future Is Now (FiN) Movement and Head of Mission of the Leadership and Accountability Initiative, posed a direct question to Umahi on his public platforms.
‘’On the issue of the dead woman found in Umahi’s country home and his claim that she was seconded to him as a physiotherapist, I have a very simple question; Dear Umahi, if a medical test is conducted on this lady, would your semen be found inside her or not?’’
According to Shield, the incident warrants a thorough scientific investigation, including forensic and autopsy examinations where necessary, to determine the exact circumstances of the physiotherapist’s death.
Mary Habila, a physiotherapist associated with the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), died recently under circumstances that remain under investigation after she was found unresponsive at Umahi’s country home in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
The incident has attracted significant public attention, with allegations and counter-allegations circulating on social media.
Responding to the controversy during a public briefing, Umahi denied any wrongdoing and dismissed allegations of a cover-up.
According to the minister, Habila’s family members forced open the room where she was staying after they were unable to reach her.
He said medical personnel from DUFUTH were immediately contacted and rushed her to the hospital, where efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Umahi also stated that the matter was reported to the police by the deceased’s family, insisting there was no attempt to conceal the incident.
Describing the allegations against him as politically motivated and defamatory, the minister said he had instructed his legal team to institute legal proceedings against individuals spreading what he described as false claims.
He added that an autopsy would be conducted once the deceased’s parents grant the required consent.
Despite Umahi’s explanations, Shield and other advocates have continued to demand an independent forensic investigation.
They maintain that only the findings of a transparent, professionally conducted autopsy and forensic examination can conclusively establish the cause and circumstances of Habila’s death and address the questions that have emerged since the incident.
