The European Union (EU) has stated in its final report that Nigerian police ignored thugs causing disruption and havoc during the 2023 general elections, while cracking down on journalists who were reporting and gathering evidence of violence.
The EU's Election Observation Mission Nigeria 2023 report highlighted the failure of law enforcement agencies to prosecute individuals who attacked or obstructed journalists. Multiple incidents involving media were confirmed by EU observers, with some attacks occurring in the presence of police.
The report also dismissed claims of the elections being free and fair, emphasizing the prevalence of violence and bloodshed, resulting in the loss of lives.
