Nigerians Express Outrage, Demand Justice For 21-Years-Old Glory Okolie.
Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has ordered an investigation into the illegal detention and enslavement of Glory Okolie, a 21-year-old lady arrested by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Imo State.
The IGP formed a committee to probe the case following the social media outrage that trailed Okolie’s detention.
The lady was arrested on June 17 as bait to get a member of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and kept in detention for several weeks as a maid.
On Tuesday, a human rights activist and Director-General of Behind Bars Initiative, alerted the public on the unlawful detention of Glory Okolie. Mr Gwamnishu narrated via a Facebook post how the young lady was supposedly arrested and turned into a ‘maid,’ washing clothes and cooking food at the IRT office in Owerri.
“Miss Glory Okolie, who enrolled for the 2021 JAMB exam, has been in police detention from 17th June 2021 till date. She left the house and never returned,” he said.
“Since 17th June, her family had searched for her in hospitals and mortuaries but couldn’t find her. Ending of June 2021, a young man who was freed from the IRT office Tiger Base, Owerri, told the Okolie family that he saw Glory in the custody of IRT officers cooking and washing clothes for them.”
FIJ gathered that the lady was later transferred to an Abuja prison and tagged an IPOB/ESN member after police officers collected up to N220, 000 from her relatives in Imo.
According to Gwamishu, police could not link Okolie to any offence other than being a girlfriend of a suspected IPOB member. He also told Punch he met with Olatunji Disu, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the IRT over the matter.
“The current head of the unit said he just resumed and that the IG commissioned a committee to look into people arrested for IPOB issues after the Glory story went viral,” he said.
“The committee is already profiling the suspects. They are many; they are more than 100 and they are interviewing them.
“We learned the committee will give a report tomorrow (Friday) morning and we were told to come and pick the girl by 11 am.”
