Gov. Lalong Accuses Nigerian Citizens Of Using Section Of Conventional Media, Social Media To Threaten Country's Democracy.
.... Says Individuals Must Not Be Allowed To Become Stronger Than Democratic Institutions.
The Governor of Plateau state Simon Lalong at a dinner to mark Democracy Day in Nigeria organized on Saturday at the Plateau state government house in Jos the state capital said, some Nigerians have resorted to the use of social media for their selfish interest at the expense of 'democratic values' of Nigeria.
He said,
" It is expedient for me to draw attention to the worrying situation where a section of the conventional media and to a large extent the social media ate becoming a threat to Nigeria's democracy.
" People who want pursue their personal interests are using some sections of the media irresponsibly
" They go about propagating falsehood, fake news, incitement and refusing to abide professional code of ethics.
" Sometimes, when you follow what some people put on social media, you wonder whether they believe in Nigeria. "
Admonishing all Nigerians he said, they must be responsible and show consciousness in guarding the country's democracy jealously.
He further stressed that the unity of Nigerians setting aside political, religious or ethnic affiliations, would help in overcoming poverty, insecurity, religious fanaticism, ethnic, bigotry, intolerance, lawlessness, political rascality and corruption.
Lalong laid emphasis on role of citizens and also added that burden must not be laid on leaders neither should leaders be placed under duress to grant selfish requests of that is not in the interest of the public and Nation at large stressing that individuals should not be allowed to be stronger than democratic institutions.
According to him,
" Nigeria will not collapse or disintegrate. Let us not dwell on our ethnic, religious, political and ideological difference but embrace out diversity which is our greatest strength.
" When we stand together and promote justice, equity, fairness and tolerance to one another, there will be no limit to the greatness of Plateau state and Nigeria as a whole."
Gov Lalong hammered on the commitment of his administration to empower youths via programmes that involve both government and non-governmental agencies in anticipation of curbing the vulnerability of youths.
