The Federal Government had earlier given January 19 as Ultimatum for all telecom subscribers with National Identity Number (NIN) to link their NIN with their SIM cards, while subscribers who prior to the time of announcement didn't have NIN were given grace to complete the process latest February 9.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has however issued a warning to Nigerians to avoid using what it has described as “fake” app which was earlier claimed by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to be of assistance in linking the National Identity Number (NIN) of Nigerians to their SIM cards.
This warning from NIMC goes against the words of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ali Isa Pantami last week.

The Minister earlier claimed that NIMC had developed a mobile app which had the capacity to link up to seven SIM cards to one National Identity Number (NIN).
In an interview on the segment 'Politics Today' which took place last week Friday on ChannelsTV, Minister Pantami stipulated that the ministry and NIMC were working on transforming the NIN enrollment process as regards linking National Identity Numbers (NIN) to SIM cards in response to the demand of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC).
He's said,
“ We developed an app, when you go online, you will see it,” the minister said.
“ On that app, as long as you have your NIMC number, you will only download the app without visiting any office. You will be able to link up to seven SIM numbers to only one. I have already downloaded the app, launched the app, and already linked some of my numbers immediately. This is part of digitalization.” he added.
On Monday, NIMC shockingly via it's official Twitter handle, stated in a tweet tagged 'Scam Alert' that it is not in any way associated with the said app.

According to the Commission,
“NIN Linker” on Goggle Play Store, is run by fraudsters who use it to harvest the NIN and Bank Verification Number (BVN) of subscribers.
It further said,
“ The app was not created by NIMC or the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is run by fraudsters who are currently harvesting people’s NINs and BVNs by default,” NIMC said.
The Commission advising members of the public stressed that Nigerians must protect their data and avoid disclosing any personal information to platforms or people who are neither recognized nor authorized.
